Drain pipes have been manufactured from different materials throughout the years and some of those materials include galvanized steel, iron pipe, copper and ABS plastic piping. Each of which have their inherent set of advantages and dis-advantages for various reasons that we won't  go into detail about in this article. Today we will focus on metal drain pipes, but this information etches over into plastic piping as well.

So, why do kitchen drain pipes clog more often in cold weather? Well, the answer isn't going to be some kind of shocking scientific discovery (sorry ahead of time)

The semi simple answer is twofold. 1.) Kitchen drains have food particles and grease that builds up inside of them over time. 2.) In the extreme cold winter months, those kitchen drains under the house are also cold. Therefore, those greasy/foody stuffs tend to solidify almost instantly as they enter the drain pipe.

While it is true that plastic ABS drain pipes are designed with a cellular core which acts as a heat dissipation feature that helps prevent the plastic from warping or sagging while hot water is draining through them, ABS drains are not immune in any sense to the problem caused by cold weather. Metal drain pipes will obviously be more of a concern in the cold Winter months.
